2020 Chicago River Blue Awards Announced

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the non-profit Friends of the Chicago River’s Blue Awards, which recognize river-sensitive projects for exceptional contributions to continuing the improvement of the Chicago River waterway. There are three award tiers: Blue (1st), Silver (2nd) and Green (3rd).

Tinley Park was among one of the Green Ribbon recipients, for their new North Street Permeable Paving.

“Innovative stormwater management projects, such as North Street in downtown Tinley Park filter and retain stormwater before it enters our urban waterway system. They also are essential in increasing our resiliency to damaging large storm events. This successful partnership between MWRD and the Village of Tinley Park replaced over 16,000 square feet of asphalt with water absorbing permeable pavers. The project provides more than 69,000 gallons of stormwater storage on site. Friends celebrates these local municipal efforts.”

Cleverly, some of the the downtown pavers are layed out in the design of piano buttons. Very on brand for Tinley’s newish music-centric identity.

Tinley Park North Street Permeable Pavers Project

The Village’s North Street Permeable Paving project recently won a Green Ribbon in the 2020 Chicago River Blue Awards, which recognizes river-sensitive projects for exceptional contributions to continuing the improvement of the waterway.

North Street was constructed using permeable interlocking paver stones to help capture almost 60,000 gallons of water at the front-end of any storm, which prevents runoff within the North Street right of way.

Construction on North Street was completed in 2019 and was funded by the Village and in part by a $200,000 Green Infrastructure Grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Work included reconstruction and beautification, including new paver stones and crosswalks that resemble piano keys.

In addition to Public Works Director Kevin Workowski and his team, the North Street Project included Robinson Engineering, Austin-Tyler Construction and LPS Pavement Company.

American Public Works Award

Earlier this year, the Village of Tinley Park’s North Street Permeable Pavement won a technical innovation award, issued by The Southwest Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA).

The APWA cited the project’s use of permeable interlocking paver stones as a major factor in its decision to select North Street as the award recipient. The interlocking paver stones help to capture almost 60,000 gallons of water at the front-end of any storm, which prevents runoff within the North Street right of way.
