Finding a place that makes fresh macarons near Tinley Park is just a smidge like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Having not grown up in the southwest Chicago suburbs I was at a loss. I needed a local’s help.

I first reached out to the Tinley Park Mom Facebook Group that I started this summer. I got one responder who recommended a bakery called Zettlemeire’s. To widen my net and gather more options, I reached out to another Facebook Group that had way more members and got six responders. Aside from the Jewel-Osco and Mariano’s recommendations, I was recommended:  Isn’t That SweetBakewell Bakery Inc. and The Macaron Shoppe. I then analyzed the online reviews, online presences and offerings of all four bakeries.

What made me choose The Macaron Shoppe was:

  1. It’s brand new – few reviews, no website, only a Facebook page
  2. It’s a home-based business
  3. Specializes in macarons only
  4. Changes flavors and does custom flavors by request

The Macaron Shoppe

The Macaron Shoppe is a home-based business out in Mokena, run from the home of Kim Friedl since around September of 2017. You can call or e-mail Kim, her current menu of the moment is usually posted on the Facebook page of The Macaron Shoppe, but you can ask Kim to make you special macarons with flavors you’d like too. Kim charges $2 per macaron, which is typical across the American market for this famous French confection.

Unlike a traditional bakery you can’t just walk in and ask to try samples that are already in a big glass display case. But you are welcome to stop by Kim’s home to try the flavors she has in stock. For the time being Kim is running The Macaron Shoppe from her home, but that could change if her business really takes off.

I had a pleasant experience working with Kim; the transaction was easy and the macarons were very nice to the taste. Definitely not your typical store-bought macarons. I brought Kim’s raspberry champagne and chocolate macarons as a dessert at my parents-in-laws’ Thanksgiving party this year and everyone loved them.

I would highly recommend The Macaron Shoppe to anyone looking for that specialized macaron experience.
