I am happy to share with you a special and refreshing event that takes place in one month, the Tinley Park Recycling Extravaganza, a collaboration between the Village’s Environmental Enhancement Commission and the Tinley Park Lions Club.

Date: Saturday, September 4, 2021

Time: 8:00 AM – Noon

Location: 80th Avenue Train Station (South Parking Lot) – 18001 S. 80th Avenue

eWorks will be collecting electronics.

Dart will be collecting #6-type Styrofoam.

Homewood Disposal Service will be collecting paper, cardboard, and steel.

Earth Paint will be collecting Paints and Stains.

Tinley Park Lions Club will be collecting eye glasses, hearing aids, pop tabs, keys, household items, ink cartridges, and cell phones.

Since there have been several shredding events in different villages and towns this summer, and more to come, the Tinley Park Recycling Extravaganza will be foregoing paper shredding at its event.

Tinley Park Recycling Extravaganza FAQs

1. I understand there is a fee to recycle a TV or monitor. Can I pay ahead? Yes! You can prepay at http://recycling.eworksesi.org. 
2. Can I bring batteries to the event for recycling? Battery recycling services will not be available at this event. However, you can visit www.willcountygreen.com for battery recycling locations and best practices.
3. Can I bring compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFL) or any other types of lightbulbs to the event for recycling?There will be no CFL or other lightbulb recycling services offered at this event. However, you can visit www.willcountygreen.com for lightbulb recycling locations and best practices.
4. Can I bring old or expired prescription drugs to the event for proper disposal?Prescription drug collection will not be available at this event. However, the Tinley Park Police Department, 7850 W. 183rd St., offers a prescription drug drop-off site. The drop-off container is located near the front door and is available 24 hours a day. The container is monitored via video surveillance cameras. Residents should either remove their personal information from the prescription container or place the pills in a Ziploc bag. Residents can mix any kinds of acceptable pills in one bag. Accepted items include prescription patches, medications and ointments, as well as over-the-counter medications, vitamins and medications for pets. Prohibited items include hydrogen peroxide, inhalers, aerosol cans, non-prescription ointments, lotions or liquids; thermometers, needles/sharps and medication from businesses or clinics. When I first moved to Tinley, there was this unsitely site by the Tinley Park Police Department Building where people would just dump junk and things that needed recycling. Thankfully that was removed a few years ago, but I keep thinking “wouldn’t it be fantastic if Tinley Park had a huge recycling center?” I don’t know the history of recycling programs here in the Chicago Southland, so I can only speak from my limited experience as a resident of only a few years. But I do know that the more recycling centers the better, because the environment, nature, our planet, and our livelihoods depend on fresh living. But the trouble is not knowing where to start when it comes to taking environmental responsability. And this extravaganza is a great place to get more answers.

How To Join The Tinley Park Environmental Enhancement Commission

If you’ve always wanted to get more involved in your community but didn’t know how, the Village has just the thing! Volunteers are needed right now to serve on the Village’s Environmental Enhancement Commission.

The Environmental Enhancement Commission (EEC) works to provide, maintain and ensure a healthful environment for all Tinley Park residents now and in the future.

Serving as a commissioner is volunteering, so there is no monetary compensation for your time and efforts. But volunteering for a commission is a great way to get involved and make a positive impact on our community. Commissioners play an important role in their efforts to maintain and ensure a healthful environment for all residents, as well as for future generations.

The EEC meets at 7:00 PM the second Tuesday of each month in the Kallsen Center at Village Hall, where they formulate, prepare and recommend to the Village Board a comprehensive plan and programs that will protect the right of each resident of this community to a healthful environment.

Recycling Options You Might Not Be Familiar With

Homewood Disposal

Homewood Disposal is the major garbage disposal and recycling service here in the Chicago Southland. They’ve been partnering with homes and business throughout Illinois and Indiana to create clean communities for over 60 years. And they created a garbage and recycling resource page recently just for Tinley Park residents. Check it out for valuable information related to garbage and recycling pickup, including collection schedules. And if your subdivision, townhome association, or whatever type of place you live, you can call Homewood if you’d like to start having recycling taken from your curb.

Orland Township Highway Department

The other recycling option you might not know about is run through the Orland Township Highway Department Recycling Service Station.

Residents can recycle their electronics at 16125 Wolf Road Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a news release from the town.

The program is operated through eWorksElectronics Services, Inc., a private company that creates. jobs for the developmentally disabled.

A coupon is required to recycle all televisions and computer monitors and can be purchased online at http://recycle.eworksesi.org/. Coupons can also be purchased at the gate when dropping off items. 

Televisions with screens less than 21 inches are $25 per unit to recycle. Those with screens larger than 21 inches are $35 per unit to recycle.
